In an unprecedented manner, what has occurred in India in last 4 days with jantar mantar as its epicenter has been extra-ordinary, to say the least. Just when we thought, we had seen it all in the egyptian and tunisian uprising aptly christened ‘jasmine revolution’, Indian had its glorious mass struggle what people are now calling as “Doosra revolution”! (No bhajji din’t deliver this one and his off-form bowling continues even after the the world cup)
On april 5th it started with one gandhian man threatening to go on fast against corruption that had crept into this nation’s ethos. Obviously, there were 1000 reasons to support this man’s call who had done a “Anna-tyaag-unto-death”. People support kept coming in with out of work techies tweeting away their time for the cause. Even students who are usually engrossed in all things unholy were suddenly debating about “Jan Lokpal” bill as against who is hot and who is not in the campus. People were coming out in candle light rallies all across the nations- infact the sales of candles had even surpassed the last hourly blackout in the country, which as a matter-of-fact happens every day!
On the third day, the movement looked to have reached its peak and some action was expected any moment with pressure coming in from all quarters of country- middleclass, poor, actors, wannabe-actors, models, rich-with-no-pasttime, schoolchildren and Humanities course students who apparently had to do compulsory field work for grade.
However amidst all this hoopla, what came as a surprise to many was the support it garnered from the IPL team owners and media houses. As the 4rth season of IPL was scheduled to begin from 8th april, there was an increasing pressure from the team owners who felt that there would be none left to watch the games if geeks and middle class with no social life start participating in rallies. On condition of anonymity, one of the ipl team owners said that the teams had jointly solicited the help on a certain Miss Rina Nadia for forcing the government into acceding to the demands. Also there were news of one starlet miss Punam pondey offering to go without clothes in support of the movement. She said, and I quote ” .. am a gandhian throughout. I am all for green notes and no clothes. Don’t you know that it was gandhi who said to go swadeshi and you know how difficult it is to find Indian clothes these days. This would be my ultimate sacrifice for the country“.
With all the heat turning up on government, On the fourth day of the protest government gave into all the demands and has said that they will have a bill/draft tabled in parliament in monsoon session alongwith the JPC report and the PAC report and the Women’s Reservation bill and 27th Pay commission for the ministers for their salary hike. They also said they are confident of passing atleast one bill this session.
Over to you mike..
Thumbs up for taking some time out and writing something.
